Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Inaugurates Gomaspan Dam in Erbil Province
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attended a ceremony on Wednesday to mark the official opening of the Gomaspan Dam, the largest dam in Erbil province and the third largest in the Kurdistan Region, following the Dukan and Darbandikhan dams.
Located 35 kilometers northeast of Erbil, the Gomaspan Dam spans an area of 6.125 million square meters and is a vital project for the region. The dam relies on rainwater and local springs, with an expected storage capacity of approximately 115 million cubic meters.
The project is considered one of the key strategic initiatives of the 9th Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Engineers involved in the construction emphasized the dam's unique design, noting that it was built using Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC), a material used for the first time in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
The Gomaspan Dam is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing water resources in the area, increasing groundwater levels, and helping to combat the effects of drought. Additionally, the dam is anticipated to become a major tourist attraction, further boosting the local economy.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Barzani praised the project's contribution to water sustainability and economic development in the region, underscoring the government's commitment to addressing environmental challenges.
The opening of the dam is seen as a significant step forward in strengthening Kurdistan’s infrastructure and ensuring long-term water security for Erbil and surrounding areas.
