PM Masrour Barzani Stresses Minority Representation and Citizen Participation in Upcoming Elections
In a recent episode of “Conversation with the Prime Minister,” Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani addressed the crucial issues of minority representation and citizen participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The prime minister highlighted the importance of unity and protecting the rights of diverse communities within the Kurdistan Region. He expressed concerns about recent legislative changes that impact the allocation of minority quota seats in the Kurdistan Parliament. Barzani criticized the removal of some reserved seats for minority groups, calling it an attack on their political rights.
“The KDP should be proud that it has become a source of trust for the Turkmen and Christian communities,” Barzani remarked, urging for a fairer distribution of seats that reflects the region’s diversity, rather than advancing political agendas.
Prime Minister Barzani also underscored the importance of active electoral participation, encouraging all citizens to engage in the democratic process. He acknowledged fluctuating voter turnout but warned that low participation could result in citizens losing their voice in important decisions. "If citizens do not participate in voting, they risk allowing others to make decisions on their behalf," he stated.
Barzani called for a peaceful and constructive election campaign, urging political parties to focus on shared goals for the region. He expressed hope that the upcoming elections would allow all communities to assert their rights and contribute to shaping the political landscape.
The prime minister also reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to inclusivity, emphasizing the need for a fair and transparent electoral process.
