UNAMI Emphasizes Need for Safe Electoral Environment in Kurdistan Region

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has highlighted the critical importance of ensuring a violence- and intimidation-free electoral environment as the election campaign for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region gets underway.

In a statement released today, UNAMI welcomed the commencement of the campaign period for the parliamentary elections, set to take place on October 20, 2024, as announced by the Independent High Electoral Commission.

The mission underscored the necessity of creating a peaceful electoral atmosphere, urging all participants to focus on healthy competition among ideas and programs. This approach is intended to empower voters to make informed decisions at the ballot box.

UNAMI called upon all candidates, political entities, and media representatives to foster a climate of respect, inclusivity, and open dialogue throughout the election campaign. It emphasized that the credibility of the elections hinges on providing a safe and welcoming environment for all candidates and voters, especially women, who often face unique challenges during the electoral process.

Additionally, UNAMI stressed that any electoral disputes should be resolved through the appropriate mechanisms, including those established by the Independent High Electoral Commission.

The mission reiterated its commitment to supporting a fair and transparent electoral process that reflects the aspirations of all citizens in the Kurdistan Region.
