Iraq Appeals to International Bodies to Counter Israeli Threats

The Iraqi government announced on Saturday that it has formally approached the United Nations Security Council, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to counter what it described as serious threats from Israel.

In an official statement, Iraq’s foreign ministry called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its role in maintaining international peace and security by taking measures to stop Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon and to pressure Israel to halt ongoing violence and threats in the region.

Clear and Present Danger

Speaking at the Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) Forum in Duhok on Friday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein warned of “serious, clear, and tangible” threats from Israel. “We have taken preventative measures domestically and internationally, including discussions with Iran, to avoid being drawn into the conflict,” Hussein said.

Israel has reportedly expressed concerns over Iranian-backed militia groups in Iraq that have shown strong support for Palestine and Hamas. Some of these groups have launched drones and missiles targeting Israel, while also conducting strikes against U.S. military installations in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for American support for Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.

Calls for International Action

In a letter to the UN Security Council, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar urged “immediate action” against attacks by Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq. He called on Iraq to “fulfill its obligations” to prevent its territory from being used as a base for such actions.

Last month, tensions escalated further when a suicide drone launched from Iraq struck an Israeli military base in the Golan Heights, killing two soldiers and injuring 24 others, according to the Israeli military.

Regional Stability in Focus

Iraq’s foreign ministry emphasized the importance of “concerted international efforts to stop the Israeli escalation in the region.” It urged respect for international laws and conventions to foster security and stability.

As the situation develops, Iraq has positioned itself as a vocal critic of Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon, while also seeking to navigate a precarious balance in the face of escalating regional tensions.
