Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani Urges Peaceful, Civilized Campaign for Upcoming Parliamentary Election
In a video message released on Tuesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani officially marked the start of the campaign for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Region's parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 20. Barzani called on all political parties to conduct their campaigns peacefully and civilly, urging them to present programs that reflect the expectations and trust of the Kurdish people.
The President emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful atmosphere among competing parties, stating that while ideological differences and competing programs are inevitable, "there must be no room for spreading hatred." He encouraged political parties to engage in constructive criticism and freely propagate their policies, with the ultimate goal of strengthening the Kurdistan Region.
Highlighting the importance of inclusivity, Barzani called for the protection and promotion of women candidates in the elections, describing this as a "vital criterion" for the region. He also reminded political parties that they are competitors, not enemies, and that all share a common Kurdish identity. "It is our collective duty to work together and ensure a peaceful, democratic process," he said.
Barzani underscored the significance of electing a strong parliament to enhance the democratic system, reinforce institutions, and advance reforms in the Kurdistan Region. He noted that the upcoming election represents an important opportunity to protect the region, implement the federal system, and safeguard the constitutional rights of the Kurdish people.
The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq has approved the candidacy of 1,191 individuals for the upcoming parliamentary election.
