Syrian Interim Government Foreign Minister to Visit Baghdad for Diplomatic Talks

Syrian Interim Government Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani is set to visit the Iraqi capital in the coming days to bolster diplomatic and economic ties between Iraq and Syria, Iraqi media reported on Wednesday.

Focus on Border Security and Bilateral Relations

During his visit, Al-Shibani is expected to meet with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Discussions will reportedly center on reopening the Iraq-Syria border, enhancing security cooperation, and resuming flights between Baghdad and Damascus.

The visit is anticipated to follow Prime Minister al-Sudani’s recent trip to Iran on January 8, according to sources familiar with the matter. While specific details of Al-Shibani’s agenda remain undisclosed, multiple topics of mutual interest are expected to be addressed.

Strengthening Diplomatic Engagement

This visit marks a continuation of growing diplomatic activity between the two nations. Last week, Iraq initiated formal communications with the Syrian interim government when a delegation led by Iraqi intelligence chief Hamid al-Shatri met with Syrian administration head Ahmad al-Sharaa in Damascus.

Syria has witnessed increased diplomatic engagement with Arab and foreign delegations following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. These efforts aim to rebuild regional relations and foster cooperation among neighboring states.

Addressing Shared Challenges

Iraq and Syria share a long, porous border that has historically posed security challenges due to instability and militant activities. Strengthening border security and restoring connectivity remain key priorities for both governments as they work to address regional challenges and promote stability.

Al-Shibani’s visit underscores the importance of collaboration between Iraq and Syria as they navigate shared security and economic concerns in the wake of ongoing regional developments.
