KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Lays Foundation Stone for Shekhan-Lalish Road Project
In a move aimed at improving transportation infrastructure, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today laid the foundation stone for the Shekhan-Lalish road project in Duhok Governorate. The project is part of ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity between key regions and facilitate travel for residents and visitors alike.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Barzani highlighted that the project fulfills a promise made to the people of the region during his visit to the Lalish Temple, a sacred site for the Yazidi community. He noted that the completion of this road, along with the Baadre-Iytit road project, which began in June, would significantly boost the local transportation network.
"This project is crucial for the thousands of visitors who come to Lalish Temple every year," Barzani said. "The new road will ease their journey and reduce the challenges they face. This region serves as a shining example of peaceful coexistence and tolerance among various communities in Kurdistan, and we remain committed to providing the best services to its people."

The Prime Minister also emphasized the KRG’s ongoing reconstruction efforts across the region, stating that despite challenges, the government remains dedicated to improving infrastructure and serving its citizens. He cited several completed projects in Duhok as evidence of the government’s determination to meet its development goals.
Barzani paid tribute to the Yazidi community’s resilience, acknowledging their perseverance despite years of suffering and violence. He reiterated the government's commitment to protecting their rights and ensuring they have access to a dignified livelihood.
Barzani also stressed the importance of implementing the Sinjar Agreement as a pathway to restoring stability in the region. He called for the removal of foreign armed groups and militias and urged cooperation with the federal government to enable the safe and dignified return of displaced Yazidis to their homes.
"Kurdistan is a homeland for all who live here," Barzani said, praising the people of Duhok and Shekhan for their hospitality and solidarity in hosting displaced families from Sinjar and beyond. "They opened their homes and hearts to their displaced brothers and sisters."
The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming that Kurdistan’s doors will always remain open to those seeking refuge, promising safety and respect for all. He expressed hope that the Shekhan-Lalish road project would benefit the entire region, especially visitors to the Lalish Temple.
