IHEC Announces Campaign Start for Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced that the campaign for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) parliamentary elections is set to begin this week. Marwan Mohammed, head of the Erbil office of the Iraqi Election Commission, confirmed on Saturday that two candidates are facing issues that need to be resolved in the coming days. Once these issues are addressed, the commission will approve the final list of candidates, and the election campaign will officially commence.

The campaign period will continue until 24 hours before the general election, scheduled for October 20. According to Iraqi election law, campaigns are required to start one month before the election date.

For this election, 2,899,578 people are registered to vote, with 2,685,000 having already received their voting cards.

Earlier this year, a ruling by the Iraqi federal court reduced the number of seats in the Kurdish parliament from 111 to 100, eliminating a quota reserved for Turkmen and Christian minorities. This decision led to protests from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), one of the region's major political parties, which initially announced a boycott of the elections and did not register candidates, causing a political stalemate.

However, after the judiciary restored five reserved seats for minorities, the KDP reversed its decision and agreed to participate in the elections.
