President Nechirvan Barzani Stresses Significance of Upcoming Parliamentary Elections
President Nechirvan Barzani met with Claudio Cordone, the Acting Head of UNAMI and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance in Iraq.
The two sides discussed the objectives of the UN team during their remaining time in Iraq, as well as the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.
The President expressed his gratitude to the United Nations for its involvement in Iraq and its support for the parliamentary elections. He emphasized the significance of the elections in reaffirming the legitimacy of institutions within the Kurdistan Region and stressed the importance of a fair and transparent process that includes all political parties and communities.
In response, Mr. Cordone conveyed the United Nations team's appreciation for President Nechirvan Barzani's contributions and initiatives regarding the electoral process. He praised the President's pragmatic and effective management of the elections and reaffirmed the UN's commitment to supporting the process.
The discussions also covered the recent meeting between the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and key parties of the Kurdistan Regional Government at the Presidency, Erbil-Baghdad relations, and the latest developments in the broader region.
