Kurdistan Prime Minister and Iraqi National Security Advisor Discuss Security and Turkish Incursion
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araaji on Thursday to discuss the latest developments in Iraq's security situation. The meeting underscored the necessity for enhanced cooperation and coordination between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi federal government to combat terrorism and maintain stability in the country.
Both officials emphasized the importance of implementing the Sinjar agreement and normalizing the situation in the region. The agreement aims to restore order and facilitate the return of displaced residents to their homes in Sinjar, which has been a contentious area due to the presence of various armed groups.
In addition to these topics, the Iraqi delegation, led by Araaji, addressed the presence of the Turkish army in the border areas of the Kurdistan Region. This visit, following a recommendation from the Iraqi Armed Forces Commander, aimed to discuss the ongoing Turkish incursion with KRG officials. Recently, reports have surfaced about renewed fighting between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Turkish army in the region, particularly in Duhok province.
Kurdish authorities have repeatedly urged both the Turkish army and the PKK to refrain from using Kurdistan territory as a battlefield for their conflicts. Despite these appeals, hostilities between the two sides have persisted, posing significant challenges to regional stability.
The discussions between Barzani and Araaji reflect a continued commitment to addressing security concerns and fostering collaboration to ensure peace and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
