PM Masrour Barzani Calls for Official Recognition of Halabja as a Province, Lays Foundation Stone for Silo Project

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has renewed his call on the federal government to expedite the official recognition of Halabja as a province, emphasizing its historical significance and the necessity for enhanced development initiatives.

During a visit to Halabja on Sunday, Prime Minister Barzani laid the foundation stone for a new silo project, which will have a capacity of 40,000 tons of wheat. Addressing the ceremony, he expressed his commitment to serving the people of Halabja and fostering economic growth in the region.

"I am pleased to return to Halabja to lay the foundation stone for this silo project, which will play a crucial role in the economic development of the province," Barzani stated. He highlighted a recent visit from the Halabja Provincial Support Council, noting fruitful discussions on enhancing services and economic infrastructure in the area.

Barzani lamented the prolonged delay in recognizing Halabja as a province by the Iraqi parliament and federal government, despite the Kurdistan Regional Government's decision over a decade ago. He affirmed ongoing efforts by the KRG to engage with federal authorities to expedite these essential measures.

"Halabja, like many regions in Kurdistan, has suffered greatly and symbolizes the oppression faced by the Kurdish people under the former Iraqi Baath regime," Prime Minister Barzani emphasized. He called for unity among Kurdish political parties in Baghdad to advance Halabja's provincial status.

The silo project, allocated 26 billion dinars and covering 52 acres of land, aims to enhance food security with its storage capacity and is slated for completion within 700 days. PM Barzani expressed hope that such initiatives, alongside private sector involvement, will contribute to Halabja's economic prosperity and the broader development of Kurdistan.

This significant step is expected to bolster Halabja’s economy and infrastructure, providing a much-needed boost to a region with a poignant history and promising future.
