Erbil Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Urban Planning and Infrastructure Development to Combat Climate Change

Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw has reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to urban planning and infrastructure development as key strategies to combat climate change. Speaking at an Urban Planning Conference organized by the Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism on Sunday, Khoshnaw emphasized the vital role of the green belt project in safeguarding citizens and addressing climate challenges through innovative urban solutions.

"The development of infrastructure projects and urban planning are among the government's top priorities, reflecting the views of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government," Khoshnaw affirmed. He underscored the strategic importance of these initiatives in enhancing Erbil's livability and resilience against climate impacts.

Khoshnaw detailed specific measures under the green belt project, including the integration of cycling paths currently in the initial planning stages. These paths aim to improve urban mobility while contributing to Erbil's environmental sustainability goals.

Moreover, the governor highlighted the significance of preserving Erbil's rich historical heritage, particularly the Erbil Citadel, a cherished monument and tourist attraction. "The green belt project is not just about infrastructure; it's about preserving our cultural identity and enhancing the quality of life for our residents," Khoshnaw added.

The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism organized the conference as a platform to advance urban development strategies aligned with international standards. Minister Sasan Awni emphasized that the event marked the culmination of five years of expert collaboration aimed at progressing critical infrastructure projects for Erbil's growth.

"This conference underscores our commitment to sustainable urban development," Minister Awni stated, noting its significance alongside previous conferences addressing revenue restructuring, archaeology, and post-coronavirus tourism recovery.

The conference serves as a testament to Erbil's proactive approach to urban planning and infrastructure, ensuring that the city not only meets current demands but also paves the way for a sustainable future.
