International Coalition Allocates $1 Billion to Support Peshmerga Forces
The International Coalition Against Islamic State (IS) has invested over $1 billion over the past eight years to arm, train, and advise the Peshmerga forces, in an effort to bolster their capabilities in the fight against the terrorist group.
The coalition, which was formed in September 2014 in response to IS militants seizing control of Mosul and the Nineveh province in northern Iraq, comprises 87 countries. It is dedicated to degrading and ensuring the enduring defeat of IS in Iraq and Syria.
As part of its advise, enable, and assist mission, the coalition supports the integration of various Peshmerga units into a unified force under the Ministry of Peshmerga. This strategic move aims to enhance coordination and effectiveness among Kurdish forces.
On July 12, 2016, the United States and the Kurdistan Region signed a landmark 10-year military agreement focused on arming, capacity building, and training Peshmerga forces. This agreement, detailed in a 2016-2026 memorandum, outlines the coalition's commitment to supporting Kurdish forces with significant investments, amounting to over $1 billion since its inception.
The coalition's continued presence in the region is deemed vital by security experts, especially with the persistent threat of IS resurgence in Iraq. The support provided by the coalition is crucial in enabling local security forces to build their capacity and independently address security challenges.
As the coalition enters its tenth year, its commitment to the Kurdish forces and the broader mission of ensuring stability in Iraq remains steadfast. The ongoing efforts to arm, train, and advise the Peshmerga reflect a long-term strategy aimed at sustaining peace and security in the region.
