Erbil, Kurdistan Region — Masoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has endorsed the Kurdistan Region Presidency’s announcement to hold elections on October 20. Barzani released a statement on Wednesday, urging all political parties to ensure the success of the electoral process.

“I congratulate the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region on setting the date of the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament elections for October 20. We support the holding of free and fair elections,” Barzani declared.

Barzani emphasized the need for political parties to consider the current situation in the Kurdistan Region and to cooperate responsibly to ensure the success of the democratic process. He highlighted the importance of maintaining stability and fostering coexistence among the region's diverse communities.

“We call on the political parties to consider the situation in the Kurdistan Region and to cooperate responsibly to ensure the success of the democratic process and maintain stability and coexistence,” the Kurdish leader added.

The rescheduled election date was announced by Dilshad Shahab, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Presidency, during a press briefing on Wednesday. The elections were initially set for June 10 but were delayed due to political disagreements and the annulment of 11 seats by the Iraqi Federal Court.

The decision has received praise from multiple foreign diplomats, including representatives from the US, EU, UNAMI, Canada, and France. These diplomats reiterated their support for fair and transparent elections in the Kurdistan Region.

The upcoming elections are viewed as a crucial moment for the Kurdistan Region. Leaders, including Barzani, stress the importance of democratic practices in maintaining the region’s stability and promoting coexistence among its diverse communities.
