Iraq Braces for Scorching Heat: Temperatures Set to Hit 50 Degrees Celsius

Iraq’s meteorology and seismology organization announced on Friday that temperatures are expected to soar to a blistering 50 degrees Celsius in seven provinces the following day.

"The weather for tomorrow, Saturday, will generally be clear and hot with some clouds, and light dust rising in the western region during the day," the organization posted on Facebook. This extreme weather pattern is forecasted to persist through Tuesday.

In response to the impending heatwave, Iraq’s health ministry issued urgent guidelines on Thursday, urging citizens to stay indoors and avoid direct sunlight, particularly during the peak heat hours from 10 am to 4 pm.

Last year, extreme summer temperatures were recorded worldwide, with Iraq being significantly affected. The country is ranked as the fifth most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change globally. Scorching summer temperatures are a familiar challenge in Iraq, especially in the southern regions, which regularly experience temperatures around 50 degrees Celsius. These high temperatures are exacerbated by issues such as water scarcity, desertification, and reduced rainfall.

However, the situation is worsened by a lack of access to basic services such as water and electricity, making it increasingly difficult for residents to endure the extreme heat.

As Iraq braces for the soaring temperatures, the government's advisories and preparation efforts are crucial in helping citizens cope with the harsh weather conditions.
