Germany Announces New Plan to Assist Peshmerga Forces in Kurdistan Region

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a significant move to bolster the capabilities of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, the commander of German forces in the Kurdistan Region has unveiled a new plan aimed at enhancing military support and coordination. The announcement came during a meeting between Brigadier General Issa Uzer, Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Ministry, and Colonel Lars Persikowski, Commander of German Forces in the Kurdistan Region, on Sunday.

According to a statement from the Peshmerga Ministry, the meeting centered on Germany's latest initiatives and projects designed to support the Peshmerga forces. These efforts are being coordinated closely with the Ministry of Peshmerga to ensure effective implementation.

Brigadier General Uzer expressed his gratitude towards Germany for its ongoing military assistance and emphasized the importance of continued support from international allies. "We expect more coordination from our friends in the international coalition," he stated, highlighting the necessity of reorganizing and strengthening the Peshmerga forces.

Germany has played a crucial role in the international coalition against the Islamic State (IS), providing vital military support to the region. In a show of ongoing commitment, the German parliament recently approved an extension of its military mission in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq for an additional year. This extension allows Germany to maintain up to 500 soldiers in the area, who are tasked with advising and training both the Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces.

The international coalition, formally established in October 2014 and led by the United States, comprises 84 nations dedicated to combating IS. Germany's contributions have been instrumental in this collective effort, particularly in aiding the Kurdish forces who have been on the frontlines of the battle against IS.

This new plan marks a continuation of Germany's steadfast support for the Kurdistan Region and underscores the importance of international cooperation in ensuring regional stability and security.
