Undersecretary of State Uzra Zeya's Diplomatic Visit to Jordan and Iraq

Undersecretary of State Uzra Zeya's Diplomatic Visit to Jordan and Iraq

Undersecretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya, embarked on a diplomatic mission to Jordan and Iraq this week, with a focus on advancing regional humanitarian, human rights, and civilian security priorities.

Zeya commenced her journey in Amman, Jordan, where discussions centered on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Jordan's role in facilitating humanitarian aid delivery to Palestinians affected by the crisis.

Transitioning to Baghdad, Iraq, Zeya held significant meetings with top officials including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, Deputy Prime Minister Fuad Hussein, Minister for Migration and Displacement Evan Jabro, and Minister of Interior Abdul Amir Shammari.

In Iraq, Zeya emphasized the importance of progress for survivors of the ISIS genocide, specifically urging Iraqi federal and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) leaders to address the needs of Yezidis and other affected religious and ethnic groups.

The visit underscores a shifting focus in U.S. Middle East diplomacy, which now places increased attention on Iraq and regional security matters following earlier engagements with Iraqi and Kurdish leaders in Washington.
