Turkmen Elli Party Withdraws from Kurdistan Region's Elections Over Supreme Court Ruling

The Turkmen Elli Party has made a significant announcement, declaring its withdrawal from the Kurdistan Region's upcoming parliamentary elections. This decision comes amidst mounting concerns over recent rulings by Iraq's Supreme Federal Court, which have stirred controversy and raised questions about fair representation.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Turkmen Elli Party expressed strong opposition to the Supreme Federal Court's decision to annul quota seats designated for ethnic and religious groups residing in the Kurdistan Region. The ruling, issued in February of this year, has sparked criticism for allegedly violating fundamental principles outlined in the Iraqi constitution, particularly the principles of separation of powers and the federal system.

The party underscored the potential consequences of the court's decision, warning that it could lead to an imbalance in representation within the Kurdistan Region's parliament. Such an outcome, the party argued, threatens the harmonious coexistence among the diverse population of the Region.

The Turkmen Elli Party emphasized that its withdrawal from the electoral process is contingent upon the implementation of measures to address these concerns and mitigate perceived threats to the integrity of the elections. This move follows a similar decision made earlier this month by a coalition comprising Chaldean, Assyrian, Armenian, and other Turkmen parties and associations, who also opted to boycott the parliamentary elections in protest against the Supreme Federal Court's ruling.

With the Kurdistan Region's parliamentary elections scheduled for June of this year, political parties are now gearing up to compete for the 100 seats up for grabs in the parliament. This shift in dynamics underscores the importance of addressing grievances and ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral process in the Region.
