Drone Strike Targets Militants in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan Province
In a recent development, Iranian state media has reported a drone strike targeting a vehicle in Iran's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, resulting in the death of two individuals. The operation was carried out by Iranian security forces against what was described as a "terrorist vehicle" in the Zahedan district of the province.
The targeted individuals were identified as militants, although their specific affiliation was not disclosed in the report by IRNA (Islamic Republic News Agency). Sistan and Baluchestan province, which borders Pakistan, is predominantly Sunni in a Shiite-dominated Iran and has been a hotspot for insurgent activities by groups like Jaish al-Adl (Justice Army).
Jaish al-Adl, known for its insurgency against the Iranian government, has been responsible for a series of attacks targeting security forces in the region. The group gained international attention when it was designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) by the United States in 2019, following a deadly assault on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that claimed the lives of 27 guards near Zahedan.
Recent attacks attributed to Jaish al-Adl include a strike on a police patrol in the Sib and Souran district earlier this month, resulting in the death of five police officers. Just a week prior, the group carried out one of its deadliest assaults in years, claiming the lives of 16 Iranian security personnel, including members of the IRGC, in Sistan and Baluchestan province.
The region has seen recurring violence fueled by militant groups, posing significant security challenges for Iranian authorities, particularly in the border areas of Sistan and Baluchestan. This recent drone strike underscores ongoing efforts by Iranian security forces to counter the activities of armed insurgents operating in the province.
