Turkmen Political Parties Join KDP in Boycotting Kurdistan Region Parliamentary Elections

Ten Turkmen political parties have declared their decision to abstain from participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, aligning themselves with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) stance.

In a unified statement issued on Monday, the Turkmen political factions reiterated their support for Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, who heads the KDP. They underscored their commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of Turkmen communities within the Kurdistan Region.

Citing recent pronouncements from the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq, the parties justified their election boycott. They condemned the court's rulings as unlawful and violative of constitutional principles, particularly its nullification of certain parliamentary seats in Kurdistan and alterations to the electoral framework in the region.

This development closely follows the KDP's announcement refusing participation in elections conducted under what they termed as an imposed electoral system. The KDP echoed concerns over the Iraqi top court's decisions, which they argue encroach upon the autonomy and will of the Kurdistan Region populace.

The rulings issued by the Supreme Federal Court of Iraq in late February invalidated the distribution of quota seats in the Kurdistan parliament, prompting widespread discontent among diverse ethnic and religious groups in the area. Subsequently, a surge in the trend of election boycott emerged, with representatives from Turkmen, Chaldean, Assyrian, and Armenian parties and associations following suit in protest against the perceived infringement upon the Kurdistan Region's sovereignty and electoral process.
