Turkish Drone Strikes Hit Civilian Vehicles in Northeast Syria's Hasaka Province

Suspected Turkish drone strikes targeted at least two cars in northeast Syria’s Hasaka province, with casualties reported, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor.

The SOHR revealed that Turkish drones struck two cars in the town of Derik, one belonging to the local council and the other to Rojava’s Internal Security Forces (Asayish). This incident, which occurred in the Kurdish-controlled region, has drawn attention to escalating tensions in the area.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which holds significant control over Derik, has not yet issued a statement regarding the strikes.

Hawar News Agency (ANHA), affiliated with the Rojava authorities, reported that the drone attacks targeted four cars in the district, resulting in an unspecified number of injuries.

The Turkish defense ministry has not officially commented on the strike as of yet. However, Turkey has a history of carrying out military operations against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kurdistan Region and the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Rojava, whom it considers as terrorist organizations.

According to data from the SOHR, Turkish drone activity in Rojava has intensified in 2024, with 65 strikes recorded since the beginning of the year. These strikes have resulted in the death of 14 individuals and injuries to 15 others, including women and children.

Turkey's ongoing military operations in the region have sparked international concern and raised questions about the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire.

The situation remains fluid as local authorities and international organizations continue to monitor developments closely.
