Turkish Airstrike Kills Two Kurdish Civilians in Duhok Province, Kurdistan Region
In a tragic incident on Tuesday, a Turkish airstrike resulted in the deaths of two Kurdish civilians in the Duhok province of the Kurdistan Region. The victims, identified as Arif Taha and Bashir Omar, aged between 65 and 70 years old, were farmers residing in the villages of Garbish and Dudiye in the Nahla region.
The airstrike, carried out by a Turkish warplane, targeted a village in the Dinarta subdistrict of Akre. Along with the two fatalities, another person sustained injuries in the attack.
The Turkish military has been frequently targeting positions associated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the mountainous areas of the Kurdistan Region. The PKK, designated as a "terrorist organization" by Turkey, has been embroiled in a protracted armed conflict with Turkish forces over the Kurdish question within Turkey.
Just days prior to this tragic incident, on Friday, the Turkish Defense Ministry reported that four PKK members were "neutralized" in border regions of the Kurdistan Region. The ministry specified that these individuals were detected within the Claw-Lock Operation zone in northern Iraq. The term "neutralize" is commonly used by Turkish authorities to indicate the killing or arrest of PKK members.
Furthermore, the Turkish Defense Ministry issued a stern warning, asserting that operations against the PKK would persist until “no terrorist is left” in the region.
The incident has once again underscored the ongoing tensions and violence in the region, drawing attention to the enduring conflict between Kurdish groups and Turkish forces. Authorities in the Kurdistan Region have yet to issue a formal response to the airstrike and the casualties it caused.
