Kurdistan Region Marks World Cancer Day with Conference on Global Collaboration in Cancer Fight

In a significant initiative coinciding with World Cancer Day, the Ministry of Health of the Kurdistan Regional Government organized a conference, with media support from the Media and Information Office, aimed at addressing the global challenge of cancer. Dr. Chakdar Ahmad, a prominent cancer specialist at the Duhok Freedom Center, highlighted the importance of the event in presenting comprehensive cancer statistics and fostering awareness for more effective disease-fighting programs.

"The significance of the conference lies in shedding light on the general state of cancer and its statistics, enabling us to combat the disease through impactful programs. Awareness and early detection play a pivotal role," Dr. Chakdar Ahmad conveyed to the media and information office.

This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set the slogan "Let's challenge the government" to underscore the need for global collaboration in unifying cancer treatment and improving its quality across all nations. Dr. Chenar Sanjawi emphasized the importance of equal access to quality cancer treatment services, advocating for a united front against cancer without distinctions between rich and poor countries.

Global cancer incidence currently stands at 190 cases per 100,000 people, while the Kurdistan Region reports a comparatively lower rate of 151 cases per 100,000 people. This places the region below the global standard, showcasing positive strides in cancer management. The total number of cancer cases reported in 2023 amounted to 9,900.

The conference serves as a platform for sharing insights, fostering collaboration, and advancing the fight against cancer on a global scale. As the region joins the world in commemorating World Cancer Day, the focus remains on building a united front to overcome the challenges posed by this prevalent disease.
