French President Macron Reaffirms Support for Kurdistan's Security Amidst Regional Tensions

French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated France's steadfast support for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in preserving security and stability following Iran's missile attack on January 15. In an exclusive interview with Kurdistan 24's Barzan Hassan, President Macron affirmed his country's commitment to standing alongside the Kurdish government.

"From the very beginning, vis-à-vis the Iraqi government and Kurdistan, we had a very clear message, and I expressed my full support and solidarity to the Kurdish government in such a context," President Macron stated. He emphasized that France maintained its presence with existing bases and would be actively involved in preserving security and safety in the region.

Moreover, President Macron disclosed that France had conveyed a strong message to Tehran, urging them not to escalate or become involved in the ongoing conflict in Gaza since October. "We passed a very clear message to Iran not to escalate, not to join the situation in this war, neither directly nor through proxies," he stated, emphasizing the importance of avoiding further tensions.

Addressing the broader regional security concerns, Macron emphasized the need for a clear commitment from both regional and national governments to combat militias and terrorist activities. "We are present, we are here to fight against terrorism," he declared.

France has been a key member of the US-led coalition against ISIS, providing training and air support to the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces in their fight against the terrorist organization. Macron underscored the importance of a united front against terrorism and highlighted France's historical support for the Kurds.

In 2017, France played a crucial role in dismantling the diplomatic blockade imposed on the Kurdistan Region following its independence referendum in September 2017. The invitation of then-Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani was instrumental in mitigating tensions between Baghdad and Erbil.

President Macron's statements reaffirm the enduring partnership between France and the Kurdistan Region, reflecting their shared commitment to regional security and stability.
