Dana Gas Resumes Production After Drone Attack on Khor Mor Gas Field in Kurdistan
In a swift response to a weaponized drone attack, Dana Gas announced the resumption of gas production at the Khor Mor field in Sulaimani province, Kurdistan. The critical gas field, operated by the UAE-based company, faced disruption when a liquid storage tank was targeted by a drone, leading to a temporary halt in gas production and subsequent power outages across the Kurdistan Region.
The Kurdistan Region's natural resources ministry reported that operations at the Khor Mor field were back to normal, with gas production and power generation returning to pre-attack levels. Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Ahmed Mufti stated that detailed information about the incident and the recovery process would be published by the ministry on Saturday.
Shakir Wajid Shakir, head of Dana Gas' Iraq and Kurdistan Region branch, confirmed the resumption of operations, underscoring the company's commitment to overcoming security challenges. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani promptly ordered an investigation into the attack, with the Joint Operations Command stating that the findings would be completed within 48 hours.
Despite the absence of claimed responsibility and no reported casualties, the incident drew condemnation from various countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani urged collaboration between the federal government and regional allies to prevent future attacks, emphasizing the need for practical measures beyond mere condemnations.
The Khor Mor field, known for facing sporadic rocket attacks in recent years, has been a consistent target, often attributed to Iraqi militia groups affiliated with Iran. This incident marks the first attack in months, prompting heightened security concerns. Dana Gas had previously expressed confidence in meeting the Kurdistan Region's gas demands within two years, despite ongoing security threats. The Khor Mor field currently produces 452 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, according to Dana Gas.
