ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — In a tense incident on Thursday night, the Kurdistan Region's Counter-Terrorism Unit successfully intercepted an explosive-laden drone launched by what they referred to as "outlawed militias." The attempted attack targeted the vicinity of Erbil International Airport, where US-led Coalition forces are stationed. Fortunately, no casualties or significant material damage were reported.

The Counter-Terrorism Unit confirmed the incident, stating that at 23:06 local time, the outlawed militias initiated a drone attack against the Global Coalition forces present at the Erbil airport. This marks the latest in a series of attacks in the region.

Over the past months, Iran-backed militias have escalated their activities, carrying out more than 120 attacks on Coalition bases in both Iraq and Syria since mid-October. The motives behind these actions are widely perceived as a response to Washington's alleged support for Israel during the recent conflict with the Gaza Strip.

Key targets of these attacks in Iraq have included Asad Air Base in the western part of the country, Erbil International Airport, and Harir Air Base. The ongoing cycle of attacks has heightened tensions in the region, with fears of further escalation.

The majority of these drone attacks have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a militia group composed of various pro-Iran factions.
