Pentagon Denies Immediate Troop Withdrawal from Iraq Amidst Baghdad's Declaration

The Pentagon has officially confirmed that there are currently no immediate plans to withdraw the approximately 2,500 US troops from Iraq, contradicting Baghdad's recent announcement to initiate the removal process of the US-led military Coalition from the country.

Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder, addressing reporters, stated, "Right now, I'm not aware of any plans (to plan for withdrawal). We continue to remain very focused on the defeat ISIS mission." Ryder emphasized that the US forces are in Iraq at the invitation of Baghdad, as reported by Reuters.

The Pentagon spokesperson further mentioned that there had been no notification from Baghdad to the Department of Defense regarding a decision to withdraw US troops. Reporters were directed to the US State Department for information related to diplomatic discussions on the matter.

The announcement comes as pro-Iran Hashd al-Shaabi has initiated the collection of signatures at the Iraqi parliament to advocate for the withdrawal of US and Global Coalition forces from the country.

Hawar Nerwayi, an expert on Hashd al-Shaabi groups and Iraqi militias, highlighted that Hashd al-Shaabi-associated groups currently hold crucial positions within the Iraqi federal government. He noted that the majority representation of the Coordination Framework's forces in the Iraqi parliament could pave the way for a potential vote favoring the withdrawal of US troops.

However, Nerwayi cautioned that such a decision might disproportionately benefit Iran and Hashd al-Shaabi, potentially sidelining the interests of Sunni Arabs and Kurds. He expressed concerns that the outcome, lacking compromise and balance, could be influenced by the majority, raising apprehensions about marginalized perspectives in the decision-making process.
