Erbil International Airport Base Survives Explosive Drone Attack

In a targeted strike on Monday at 4:03 p.m., an explosive drone attacked the military base housing the Global Coalition Against Daesh at Erbil International Airport, as reported by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism.

Fortunately, the attack resulted in no damage, and Erbil International Airport continues to operate normally with flights proceeding as scheduled.

This incident follows a recent occurrence on December 8, where an unidentified suicide drone crashed into a residential building in Erbil at 6:05 p.m., causing no casualties.

Simultaneously, on the same day at dawn, at least three rockets were launched towards the Green Zone in Baghdad, targeting the U.S. Embassy. The rockets landed on the outskirts of the district, housing various government and diplomatic buildings. Thankfully, there were no reported casualties.

Responding to the Green Zone attack, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shi’a al-Sudani promptly directed security leaders to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The heightened frequency of such attacks is attributed to Iranian-backed groups, which have intensified rocket and drone assaults on U.S. bases in Syria and Iraq. The surge in hostilities is linked to the aftermath of the Hamas-Israel war, sparked by the Palestinian Islamist group's October 7 attack on southern communities in Israel.

The situation remains fluid as security forces work to maintain stability in the region amid ongoing tensions. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
