Qatar Announces Ceasefire and Hostage Release Plans in Gaza

In a significant development, Qatar has revealed key details of a planned pause in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, along with the release of Israeli hostages held by the militant group.

The official announcement states that the temporary ceasefire is set to commence at 07:00 local time on Friday. The initial start was delayed as Hamas reportedly made additional demands, according to an Israeli government source speaking to the BBC.

As part of the first phase of the agreement, Hamas is expected to release 50 hostages from Gaza, while Israel will reciprocate by freeing 150 Palestinian prisoners.

However, tensions persist as Israeli authorities have detained the director of al-Shifa hospital in north Gaza for questioning. Israel alleges that evidence suggests the hospital, under the director's management, served as a Hamas command center—a claim vehemently denied by Hamas.

The conflict began with Hamas attacks last month, resulting in 1,200 casualties and around 240 individuals taken hostage. The Gaza-based health ministry, run by Hamas, reports that over 14,000 people have lost their lives in Israel's retaliatory campaign.

This announcement marks a significant step toward a temporary halt in hostilities and the release of hostages, although challenges and disputes persist between the involved parties. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
