Rice Cultivation in Dohuk Province Aims for Self-Sufficiency and Export
Officials in the agricultural sector of Dohuk Province have announced a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts to boost rice cultivation. In a bid to achieve self-sufficiency and establish a presence in the global rice market, they revealed that this year, 21,000 acres of land in the province have been dedicated to rice farming. It is estimated that these efforts will yield approximately 23,000 tons of this vital crop.
These developments are in line with the broader agricultural plans of the Kurdistan Regional Government, which are geared towards the enhancement and expansion of the agricultural sector, and specifically, the production of rice for export beyond local consumption.
One pivotal factor contributing to the successful growth of rice cultivation is the advanced irrigation system that is being deployed. The regional government's program focuses on harnessing surface water resources and safeguarding groundwater by adopting modern irrigation techniques and the construction of dams throughout the region.
Aziz Mohammed, a local farmer, expressed his enthusiasm for the government's proactive stance, saying, "The Kurdistan government's plan is designed to ramp up local production, and we, as farmers, have received substantial support in this regard."
Mohammed elaborated on the quality and diversity of rice being cultivated, stating, "Rice in the region is of exceptional quality, and it enjoys substantial demand. There are various rice varieties, including Sheshmehi, Pejnamehi, Kesnedeti, Samaheh, Tehalaf, Masri, Saderi, and Ambri. The top-performing varieties, such as Sheshmehi and Kesnedeti, are in high demand, especially from the Akre region, known for its excellent rice production, much of which is exported. This has intensified competition in the rice market."
Ahmed Jameel, the Director General of Agriculture in Dohuk Province, emphasized the government's commitment to the agricultural sector, stating, "The Council of Ministers is directing considerable attention to the agricultural sector and the marketing of farmers' products, which has resulted in increased agricultural production and support for local demand. To achieve self-sufficiency, the Kurdistan Region is aiming for an annual production of 300,000 tons of rice."
Rice, as a staple food in the Middle East and Asia, plays a crucial role in the daily lives of the region's population. In 2022 and 2023, approximately 517 million tons of rice were consumed worldwide. Notably, Kurdish rice is recognized as one of the finest varieties in Iraq and the surrounding region, serving as the daily staple for the Kurdish people and now taking steps towards becoming a player in the global rice market.
