In a recent parliamentary decision, the Turkish government has extended its mandate to continue cross-border military operations against elements of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and its associated groups in the Kurdistan Region and Syria. The decision comes in the wake of heightened tensions following a PKK-claimed suicide attack on the national police headquarters in Ankara earlier this month.

The 600-seat Turkish parliament voted on Tuesday to extend the mandate, allowing Turkish security forces to launch cross-border operations in Syria and Iraq for an additional two years. The vote garnered 357 in favor and 164 against, providing the necessary support for the extension, which permits Turkey to deploy troops to Syria and northern Iraq.

The extension of the mandate follows the recent suicide attack on the national police headquarters in Ankara, which the PKK claimed responsibility for. In response to this attack, Turkey escalated its air offensive against PKK elements and its affiliated groups in the Kurdistan Region and neighboring Syria.

Notably, a Turkish drone attack targeted a PKK vehicle in the village of Kanikand, situated near the Haybasultan mountain on the outskirts of the city of Koya in Erbil province. This strike resulted in one casualty and one individual sustaining injuries.

The ongoing conflict between Turkey and the PKK, spanning four decades, has had significant consequences throughout various parts of the Kurdistan Region. This conflict has resulted in civilian casualties, the forced displacement of thousands of villagers, and the abandonment of mountain resorts and valuable agricultural lands. These measures have been taken due to Turkey's airstrikes and artillery shelling, primarily targeting PKK positions in these areas.
