KRG Finance Minister Reveals Kurdistan Region's Share in Iraqi Budget Less Than 5%

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Finance and Economy, Awat Janab Nuri, has revealed that the Kurdistan Region's allocation in the Iraqi budget constitutes less than 5%. This revelation comes amid ongoing discussions between Erbil and Baghdad regarding budget allocations and other unresolved matters between the two entities.

Mr. Nuri emphasized the significance of the United States consulate's involvement in addressing the issue of salaries for KRG employees. He noted that a consensus has been reached among most Iraqi political forces, highlighting that the salaries of KRG employees should not be entangled with political disputes. Instead, they should be disbursed based on the actual monthly expenditure.

The U.S. Consul in Erbil reiterated the commitment of the United States to foster a healthy relationship between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, firmly grounded in the principles of Iraq's constitution. Moreover, it was stressed that the unity and solidarity of the Kurdish community serve as a safeguard for the Kurdistan Region's interests and the realization of its rights.

One of the key points of contention in the budget discussions is how the central government in Baghdad treats the Kurdistan Region. It has been pointed out that Baghdad applies different criteria when implementing the budget law, separating the expenditures of the Kurdistan Region from those of the other 15 Iraqi provinces. Although it is stipulated that 50% of the revenue should go to the region, there are demands from the central government for the entirety of the revenue.

The ongoing negotiations between Erbil and Baghdad underscore the complexities and challenges in achieving a mutually agreeable solution. The outcome of these talks will have significant implications for the Kurdistan Region's fiscal stability and its ability to meet the needs and expectations of its employees and citizens.
