Major Drug Bust in Erbil Province: Over 100 Kilograms of Narcotics Seized

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, security forces in Erbil province have intercepted and confiscated a substantial quantity of illegal drugs, including the highly popular Captagon pills. Arkan Bibani, an officer at the Directorate of Combatting Narcotics, made the announcement during a press conference held on Thursday.

The operation, which unfolded as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related activities in the region, resulted in the seizure of more than 100 kilograms of narcotics. The confiscated drugs included 101 kilograms of Captagon pills, 5.5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, and 600 grams of heroin.

According to Bibani, these illicit substances are being trafficked into the region from neighboring countries by organized smugglers. He vehemently denied claims suggesting that political parties were involved in these illegal activities, emphasizing the government's commitment to curbing the drug trade.

Statistics revealed that 80% of drug users in the region fall between the ages of 18 and 35, with 10% of users being women and 4% under the age of 18.

Captagon pills, a methamphetamine-like stimulant, have gained popularity in Iraq in recent years, despite their associated health risks. Users often experience mild euphoria after consumption, but the drug can lead to various health problems, including high blood pressure, hallucinations, and blurred vision. Notably, irritability and fatigue are two common withdrawal symptoms associated with Captagon use.

This latest seizure underscores the ongoing efforts to tackle the narcotics trade in the region and protect public health. Last year, Iraqi forces intercepted a glider carrying a staggering one million Captagon pills in Basra, believed to be en route to a neighboring country via Iraqi airspace.

In a bid to address the issue comprehensively, the Kurdistan Regional Government's Ministry of Finance and Economy established a Drug and Psychotropic Substances Fund in April 2023. The fund aims to provide treatments for substance abusers and offers financial rewards to individuals who assist local authorities by reporting illegal drug-related activities.
