Iraq Continues Vigilance Against Lingering ISIS Threat

In a concerted effort to combat the persistent threat of the Islamic State (ISIS), the Sulaimani Asayish, Iraq's internal security forces, announced the successful arrest of two suspected ISIS members in separate operations within the city of Sulaimani. The arrests were made on Friday after meticulous information gathering and surveillance by the Asayish, as reported by the Sulaimani Asayish directorate.

According to official statements, one of the apprehended individuals had a history of active involvement with ISIS and had sustained injuries during previous engagements.

ISIS, which had seized control of substantial portions of Iraqi territory in 2014, was officially declared territorially defeated within the country in 2017. However, the group has continued to pose a significant threat by perpetrating bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions across various provinces.

Since 2014, thousands of individuals have been detained across Iraq on suspicion of having affiliations with terrorist organizations, including ISIS, with hundreds of them subsequently facing execution.

Notably, Iraqi military intelligence forces in Kirkuk province recently announced the arrest of two suspected ISIS members, with this operation being conducted in close coordination with the anti-terror forces in Sulaimani. Just earlier this month, Sulaimani Asayish forces had successfully arrested three additional suspects linked to ISIS.

Furthermore, in its ongoing commitment to eradicating the ISIS threat, the United States military's Central Command (CENTCOM) disclosed that at least two ISIS operatives were killed, and an additional 24 were detained during joint operations with Iraqi allies in the month of July. These collaborative efforts underscore the determination to safeguard Iraq's security and stability by neutralizing the remaining remnants of ISIS.

As Iraq remains vigilant in the face of continued security challenges, international attention remains focused on efforts to ensure lasting peace and security in the region.
