Iraqi Prime Minister Visits Syria to Strengthen Cooperation and Partnership

In an effort to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss matters of common interest, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani embarked on an official visit to the Syrian Arab Republic today. During his visit, Prime Minister al-Sudani engaged in discussions with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the capital city of Damascus, focusing on enhancing cooperation and partnership between the two nations. The talks also explored avenues for expanding exchanges in various sectors, including the economy, transport, trade, tourism, water management, and addressing the effects of climate change.

The visit commenced with an official reception ceremony held at the People's Palace in Damascus, where President al-Assad welcomed Prime Minister al-Sudani and the Iraqi delegation. Both leaders led the expanded talks, aiming to strengthen cooperation and partnership in multiple areas. The discussions touched upon joint efforts in security coordination to combat terrorism, aiming to bolster the security and stability of both nations and their people.

Iraq's support for Syria's reinstatement into the Arab League, following its suspension in 2011, was reiterated during the talks. In mid-April, a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, including Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan, was convened in Jeddah to discuss the issue of Syria's return to the Arab League. The recent developments indicate a growing rapprochement between Damascus and various capitals, such as Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, which have restored diplomatic relations and engaged in talks to resume consular services.

It is worth noting that the decision by the League of Arab States to resume the participation of Syrian government delegations in its meetings drew criticism from the United States on May 8, 2023.

Prime Minister al-Sudani's visit to Syria marks another significant step in the ongoing efforts to foster stronger ties and cooperation between the two neighboring countries. The discussions held between the leaders underscored their commitment to expanding bilateral relations across multiple sectors and promoting stability in the region.
