Controversy Surrounds Execution of Prisoner in Sanandaj, Iran, Despite Previously Cancelled Death Sentence
Sanandaj Central Prison has witnessed the execution of another prisoner, Jamshid Karimi from Dehgolan, whose death sentence had previously been cancelled. This distressing development came to light on Thursday, May 18, 2023, according to a report received by The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
Jamshid Karimi, a resident of Sanandaj, was condemned to death on charges of intentional murder. Shockingly, despite the victim's family having forgiven him in exchange for 4 billion tomans, his sentence was executed at 7:30 a.m. This occurred despite the fact that he had returned to his cell at 6:30 a.m., following the cancellation of his death sentence.
In another tragic incident, Mustafa Salehi from Dezli Rural District in the Central District of Sarvabad County, who was also sentenced to death for intentional murder, was executed at 6:30 a.m., just an hour prior.
It is worth noting that both prisoners were transferred to a solitary cell at Sanandaj Central Prison on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.
The news of these executions has not been reported by the media associated with the judiciary and government at the time of this report. The circumstances surrounding the decision to carry out the executions despite the previously cancelled death sentence and the victim's family's forgiveness remain unclear.
Such instances raise concerns about the transparency and adherence to due process in capital punishment cases. The human rights community continues to advocate for fair and just legal systems that prioritize the preservation of life and respect for fundamental human rights.
