Kurdistan Region to Build Three Strategic Dams to Boost Water Security
In collaboration with the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, the region has announced plans to construct three new strategic dams in order to combat drought and improve water security.
According to a statement released by the Department of Media and Information on April 26, 2023, the Kurdistan Region has announced plans to construct three new strategic dams in coordination with the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources.
The three dams, named “Dalga”, “Mandawa”, and “Bakrman”, will be built in the Erbil, Duhok and Raparin administrations respectively. The Kurdistan Regional Government has been developing construction plans for the dams, which are expected to capture a total of one billion cubic meters of water.
According to the Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, the dams will play a vital role in increasing the water supplies in the region, as well as generating electricity and improving agriculture. This announcement comes just one year after the construction of two dams in Garmian and Darbandikhan, which were filled with water in 2023 and have a combined capacity of 22 million cubic meters.
The Kurdistan Region's efforts to combat drought and improve water security are expected to have a significant impact on the region's economy and overall quality of life. As the construction of the three new dams gets underway, the Kurdistan Regional Government is committed to implementing sustainable solutions that will benefit the region for generations to come.
