Kurdistan Region Awarded Hosting Rights for 2024 CONIFA Cup
The Media and Information Office of the Kurdistan Regional Government has announced that Kurdistan has been awarded the right to host the 2024 CONIFA Cup. The tournament will be played in Kurdistan stadiums, including Sulaimani, Erbil, Duhok, and Zakho.
A CONIFA delegation visited the Kurdistan Region in March 2023 to assess the security situation and stadiums. After the assessment, it was decided to grant the right to host the Cup to Kurdistan.
Jalal Saeed, spokesman of the Kurdistan Football Association, further confirmed that the games will commence in the middle of 2024, with 16 regions set to participate. Notably, eight regions had applied to host the tournament, but Kurdistan Region was ultimately awarded the right.
The CONIFA is a non-profit organization that supports regional football teams globally. It was founded in June 2013, and the first tournament was held in Sweden in June 2014, featuring 12 teams.
