In Iran, two women have been arrested for not covering their hair in public, after being attacked with yoghurt by a man in a shop, according to sources.

The incident was caught on video, which went viral on social media. The man has also been arrested for disturbing public order. Not wearing the hijab is illegal for women in Iran, however, many women in big cities walk around without it despite the rules.

The incident follows months of protests in Iran calling for an end to the compulsory wearing of the headscarf.

Protests spread across the country in September after the death of a woman detained for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly.

Since then, thousands have been arrested, and four protesters have been executed. Despite calls to relax the rules, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi reiterated that the hijab is a religious necessity and adherence to it is obligatory.
