Kurdistan Regional Government Delegation Visits Baghdad for Negotiations

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023, that a government delegation led by the Minister of Finance and Economy, Awat Sheikh Janab, is visiting Baghdad to continue negotiations with the federal government. The delegation also includes Kamal Mohammed, Acting Minister of Natural Resources, and Omid Sabah, Head of the Council of Ministers' Office in the Kurdistan Region.

According to a statement from the regional government, the delegation will discuss the oil file with Iraqi officials, and will continue negotiations aimed at resolving disputes. Important high-level meetings have been scheduled to be held during the visit.

The visit comes after the French court's recent decision declaring the illegality of the region's oil exports to Turkey without the approval of the federal government. This has added urgency to the negotiations, which aim to resolve the oil-related issue like the budget, according to KRG Minister of Finance and Economy.

In response to the visit,
Jotiar Adil, spokesperson for the regional government, tweeted that "Today, KRG delegation visit Baghdad again to continue negotiations regarding to the oil." The Kurds say the country's 2005 Constitution gives them the right to sign agreements with oil companies and states without consulting Baghdad.
