France calls on Iran to take

Paris urged Tehran, on Friday, to take the "last decisions" to reach a settlement that would save the Iranian nuclear deal.

"We are waiting for the Iranian authorities to take the last, and most likely difficult, decisions that will allow the conclusion of the negotiations taking place in Vienna to revive the agreement on the Iranian nuclear file," French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said at a press conference with his American counterpart Anthony Blinken.

After long and arduous negotiations, Iran, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia signed an agreement in Vienna in 2015 on Tehran's nuclear programme.

The agreement provides for the easing of Western and international sanctions on Iran in return for its commitment not to acquire atomic weapons and to reduce its nuclear program and place it under strict United Nations control.

But this agreement was torpedoed in 2018, with a decision by former US President Donald Trump to withdraw from it and re-impose US sanctions.

In response, Iran abandoned part of its commitments. Upon his arrival at the White House in January, Joe Biden announced his intention to return to this agreement, and negotiations resumed in April in Vienna between the signatory states to determine the framework for this return.
