Erbil Street Named after Sir John Major to Mark Anniversary of UNSC’s Resolution 688
On 5th April 1991, in the wake of the ceasefire to the Gulf War, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 688 to prevent the Baath regime from systematic repression against the people of Kurdistan. It later led to the creation of the No-fly Zone over Kurdistan, which prevented the regime aircrafts from flying over these areas.
During a small ceremony today, Safeen Dizayee, the head of KRG’s Department of Foreign Relations, said the people of Kurdistan honor those who supported them during the hard times.
“We name this street in the capital of Kurdistan Region after this great man to pay tribute and honor his efforts,” Dizayee said in the presence of UK Consul General James Thornton, Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw, and several other officials.
Later on during a separate ceremony, another street in the capital city was named “Safe Haven” to remember the 1991’s safe haven which prohibited Baath regime’s aircrafts from flying over and bombarding the Kurds in the Kurdistan Region.
BasNews reporter said representatives of 15 consulate generals and several senior Kurdish officials attended the ceremony near Shanadar Park.
