ERBIL — Islamic State (IS) militants have significantly stepped up their terrorist attacks across Iraq, leaving several civilians killed or injured in their latest explosions.

Security officials confirmed on Saturday that a bombing hit Tawla village, west of Mosul, and killed one civilian resident of the village.

Elsewhere in Wamawa, two other civilians were severely injured after an improvised explosive device exploded.

A group of unidentified armed men, believed to be IS militants, opened fire at a policeman in Sharaban subdistrict of Diyala province, killing him instantly, official sources confirmed.

Iraq is struggling to restore security in every corner of the country, but the presence of sectarian militia forces, like the Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi, often undermines the country’s official forces and Baghdad’s plan to revive.
