Putting down roots in memory of Mullah Mustafa Barzani
Across the Kurdistan Region on Thursday, people were planting trees in memory of their beloved revolutionary leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani, a man known for his love of nature.

March 14 is his 116th birthday. He died on March 1, 1979, but is considered immortal by Kurds because of his legacy.

Barzani led the Kurdish revolutionary struggle for decades before his death. He founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and is the father of the party’s current leader Masoud Barzani.

“Plant saplings now so that they will protect you in difficult times,” read a banner strung up at a tree planting event outside of the city of Erbil.

Officials joined in, getting out shovels to plant trees inside and outside the city. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s Minister of Municipalities and Tourism Nawroz Mawloud, Erbil Governor Nawzad Hadi, and KDP’s Ahmed Kani were among those taking part in the campaign.
