ERBIL — Embarking on the efforts to eradicate extremist ideologies that led to the emergence of the Islamic State (IS) is essential now, said top Kurdish security chief.

Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, urged stepping up the efforts to defeat the IS ideology. He made the remarks while reviewing the latest developments in the war against IS in a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Iraq Maksim Maksimov.

The top Kurdish security official reaffirmed that addressing the root causes which led to the birth of IS is key to uproot the jihadist group.

While the IS is about to lose its last pocket in eastern Syria, Barzani emphasized on the importance of a political solution to the crisis in Syria, in which the will of all components is reflected.

He further explained that any solution should guarantee the safety and rights of Kurds in Syria.

Concerning the relations between Erbil and Baghdad, Barzani said a settlement of the disputes within the framework of the Iraqi Constitution remains the best option available.
