ERBIL - An Iraqi court has sentenced 40 women to death over ties to the jihadist group of the Islamic State (IS), reports said on Sunday.

According to Iraqi media reports, all of the suspects are from the western countries with different nationalities.

They have already confessed to have worked with the militant group in the past few years.

It has not been explained which court in Iraq issued the death penalties to the women, but the reports said that they were arrested in different operations.

Hundreds of foreign members of the Islamic State have so far received life or death sentences since the liberation of Mosul in 2017.
