First camp for displaced Syrians opens in Rojava

First camp for displaced Syrians opens in Rojava
Internally displaced people in Syria have begun to move into a camp established near the town of Derik in Rojava. Cizre Canton Minister of Social Affairs Dijwar Ehmed said they have now set up 50 tents, and eventually plan to have a camp of 600 tents. Ehmed said people displaced due to conflict or poor conditions could apply to live at the camp.

Migrants from towns such as Aleppo, Damascus and Kobane, including Arabs, moved into the camp on 13 May. Cizre Canton Minister of Social Affairs Dijwar Ehmed said the people who moved into the camp had previously stayed in villages, mosques and schools, adding: "We acted as we knew an urgent solution was needed."
Ehmed said they were endeavouring to meet needs such as food, water and electricity. He added that generators would provide electricity to every tent and that work was continuing to provide a permanent water supply.

Kurdistan Red Crescent donated 300 tents

Ehmed said: "The Kurdistan Red Crescent in Europe sent us 300 tents", adding that 50 of these had been set up.

"In order to put up the remaining 250 tents we are continuing to enlarge the camp and will put up the tents according to the number of migrants that arrive." Ehmed said baby food, nappies and other things for young children had been provided by the Rojava Humanitarian Aid organisation.

Ehmed continued, saying: "We provide regular meals. Apart from the Kurdistan Red Crescent we have not received any assistance from foreign charities. We have received visits, some people even came to see the camp, but no aid has arrived, despite our issuing an appeal." Ehmed said the camp in Hekmiye village could accommodate 3,000 tents, adding: "People who have lost their homes in Syria on account of the war, or have suffered from conflict in the various towns of Cizre Canton can come to the camp. People who have left Syria for various reasons can also return and stay at these camps."

The tents at the camp in Hekmiye village are waterproof and have three layers, making them heat-resistant. Facilities such as toilet blocks and kitchens have also been provided.
