Hungary to Join Growing List of Countries With Consulates in Erbil
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region –

Hungary has the green light to open a consulate in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region, where China, Canada and Kuwait have recently decided to set up diplomatic missions, according to the website of the Foreign Relations Department in Erbil.

“We are pleased to announce that work is underway in full swing with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, and that the Council of Ministers in the federal government has approved the opening of the Hungarian representation at the level of a general consulate in the Kurdistan Region," said Falah Mustafa, the head of foreign relations in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Mustafa said that, once Hungary has opened its consulate, there will be 31 foreign diplomatic missions in Erbil.

He added that the decision by Budapest follows a visit to Hungary by Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani in 2012.

He affirmed that efforts are underway to expand the level of relations with the international community.

The autonomous Kurdistan Region has largely escaped the daily violence and instability that haunts the rest of Iraq. Erbil’s stability and investment-friendly laws have encouraged more and more countries to promote business and economic relations with the energy-rich enclave.
