Attackers of Syrian Kurdish girl could be hanged
Following the recent rape of a Syrian refugee girl by six men, who were later arrested by Erbil security and sent to jail, the case was sent to court.

According to information given, the men are all aged 25-30 and three of them are brothers, one of whom has two wives.

Last Wednesday, Erbil security (Asayyish) announced that they had arrested the rapists. Following their arrests, the men admitted their crimes.

A known Kurdish judge likely to be involved with the case of the rapists in court told BasNews, “The final decision for their crime remains unclear for now, but for those who are older than 20, execution could be an option.”

According to criminal code 111 of Iraq, in paragraph 423 it notes that any person who himself, or through another, kidnaps a woman over the age of 18 with the use of force or deception is punishable by a term of imprisonment not exceeding 15 years. If the kidnapping is accompanied by any sexual intercourse with the victim, or an attempt to have intercourse with her, the penalty will be death or life imprisonment.

All six rapists have admitted that they raped the girl together.

The girl, a Syrian refugee, was on her way home from a supermarket where she was working on January 6, 2014, when she was abducted and then raped by the six men.

Syrian refugees demonstrated in protests and in defense of the rights of the girl, raising posters and slogans that the six rapists should be hanged.
