Iraqi Parliament to Decide on Official Languages Law
According to Iraqi constitution, Kurdish language must be the second official language after Arabic in Iraq. The laws however have not yet been enacted as National Iraqi Alliance frequently opposed the act. Lawmakers in Iraqi Parliament will reportedly meet today to decide on Official Languages Act.

Earlier on Tuesday October 22, Iraqi parliament held its regular session, discussing the Official Languages Act and Kurdish languages as a second official language. The meeting however has not reached any agreement on the act due to the disagreement between political diverse groups inside the parliament.

This is not the first time since Iraqi law makers seat to vote on languages act in the Parliament. On July 22, 2013, lawmakers in Iraqi Parliament were gathered to vote on Kurdish language as the second official language in Iraq.

Language has been a site of struggle since the establishment of the Kurdistan Regional Government in 1992. Since the formation of the Iraqi state, Kurds demanded the officialization of the Kurdish language and its equality with Arabic. This was a struggle between the Kurds and the state.
